Depression
Depression is characterised by feelings and thoughts of sadness, disturbed sleep, lack of energy and interest in usually enjoyable activities. A sense of low self-worth, guilt and pessimism about the future are often felt by people who are depressed. Depression can often leave a person unmotivated and feeling unable to make any positive change in their lives. Depression and anxiety often occur at the same time.
The Causes and Treatment of Depression
Depression can sometimes be caused by recent events in a person's life, such as a relationship ending, losing a job, illness, or life changes such as retirement or children leaving home.
Sometimes depression can occur without a clear cause. People can become depressed even when life seems to be going well. This can actually be harder for the person to deal with because they may not understand why they feel so low. The reasons behind this kind of depression are usually from issues far earlier in a person's life. Counselling can be very helpful for people in this situation to gain insight and to take action to break the negative life patterns of depression.
