Bullying
It is only in relatively recent times that the prevalence and damaging effects of bullying have received the attention they deserve. As a practising psychologist I have often seen people who come to me with a primary issue of bullying in the workplace. I also see people for whom an earlier experience of being bullied emerges as an important and painful issue. Many of them have suffered from the damage inflicted upon them during their schooldays, for their entire adult lives.
Workplace Bullying
People currently being bullied in the workplace will often seek counselling for support and strategies for dealing with this daily ordeal. Sometimes the experience has been so prolonged and damaging that the victim will feel they have become less effective in their work and lose confidence. Often a lack of support from work colleagues can leave the victim feeling isolated and wondering if they themselves are to blame for the bullying. Counselling can help a person see this situation more objectively and find solutions and positive change.
Bullying at School
I see many adults who are still suffering the effects of being bullied at school. Sometimes for decades, they experience low self-esteem and self-blame, lack of assertion, difficulty trusting others, and intermittent depression and anxiety. This is particularly the case when a similar experience in adult life occurs.
